Jrue Holiday is today an essential part of the Boston Celtics, but at times (days) he seemed destined to live a season fighting for nothing. That’s how it is. Milwaukee wanted to make a big change to his project and sent him to Portland to get Damian Lillard. For the point guard it was a major setback, but he was able to overcome it thanks to Chauncey Billups.
The Blazers coach did not ignore Holiday’s situation at any time and according to what Holiday told Jay King of The Athletic, he had a deep conversation with him that helped him a lot in managing that transition period. This version is corroborated by Billups himself, who took Jrue’s future as something personal.
«I love Jrue. We spent a very short period together, it’s obvious. I had a conversation, a long and good conversation with him. I knew that it was a somewhat difficult situation for him, that he would be transferred and it would catch him by surprise. I’ve been to that point before, so I could talk to him about it. It was important to me that a good person like him, who has been excellent on every team and in every community he has lived in, was treated properly and placed in a great position going to a good place,” explains the head coach of the Oregon organization.

Already at the present it is clear that such a wish was fulfilled. Leaving behind the Bucks, the team with which he won the 2021 ring, he is now part of Boston, by far the best team of the 2023-24 regular season. It was a tough few days, but the reward has been huge.
