Catapult’s New Baseball-Specific Analytics Suite Revolutionizes Injury Prevention and Performance Enhancement in Baseball

The battle to prevent costly baseball injuries is one step closer to victory with the release of Catapult’s new baseball-specific analytics suite.

Powered by new algorithms that identify baseball players’ specific swing, pitch and throwing motions, the enhanced suite is specific to the sport of baseball to help coaches reduce injury risk and streamline key performance workflows.

Catapult is the only solution that accurately captures your swing, pitching and throwing, and running needs in a single device. Developed with 36 professional and college baseball players, the new baseball kit, which costs professional teams $4.23 million annually due to baseball injuries, is designed to minimize costly sideline time.

This innovation saves coaches and teams time when making critical decisions about athlete performance and unifies reporting into one platform to maximize the chance of keeping athletes healthy.

It does this by discerning a range of fine movements, including differentiating between general throwing and pitching, giving coaches an accurate picture of how players are performing and enabling them to tailor training and recovery plans.

Metrics provided for every event tracked in Baseball Analytics include:

  • Throw, pitch and swing counting
  • Achieve maximum spin with throw, pitch and swing
  • Maximum player load by pitch, pitch, and swing
  • Maximum sum of player loads for all events of this type

Vector is the world’s smallest Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)/Local Positioning System (LPS) device, providing coaches and athletes with real-time algorithms, communications, and enhanced performance insights and capabilities. Internal inertial sensors provide detailed baseball-specific analysis that goes beyond video tracking and ball mechanics to accurately measure the physical demands of the game.

Injury prevention

Enhanced vision ultimately helps clubs avoid costly injuries that could sideline players. This is especially important because injuries to MLB players cost teams millions of dollars each season.

“Professional baseball teams have come to expect injuries to be a part of their seasons, costing an estimated $4.23 million annually, but that’s not necessarily the case,” Catapult CEO Will Lopes said.

“We built a solution that accurately captures all of a baseball player’s unique movements and running patterns and centralizes these insights to coaches so they can optimize athlete performance and avoid costly injuries.”

Catapult has been providing performance analysis to professional baseball teams since 2015. The Enhanced Baseball Suite was developed in partnership with 36 MLB and NCAA athletes and more than 800 baseball-specific events.

“By working with MLB, the NCAA and some of the best baseball teams around the world, we have a keen understanding of the challenges baseball teams face. Tracking is common in the sport, but comprehensive player workload monitoring is not. ” said Ed Liggett, Customer Success Specialist at Catapult.

“Now, with the release of a new baseball-specific analytics suite, our team can deflect pitches, glean insights in practice, and take a personalized approach to improve performance. I’m proud to have developed this solution and the value we can provide for Our team offers another baseball-specific innovation.”
