Caroline Wozniacki returns to the quarter-finals of Indian Wells and will challenge Iga Swiatek

Back on the circuit since August 2023 after three and a half years of absence to give birth to two children, Caroline Wozniacki already has the best result of her second career. The Dane (33 years old), former world number 1, won her ticket for the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 in Indian Wells by dismissing her friend Angélique Kerber (6-4, 6-2), also a former number 1 world and back since January after also having a child.

Now the 204th player in the world, she started the first set well, leading 5-2 before being broken twice in a row by Kerber. But at 5-4, Wozniacki took over his opponent’s serve to conclude the set. More solid on her play, she broke the German twice more in the second set to conclude the match in 1h24.

A shock against Swiatek

“I’m happy with where I am, especially physically. I’m not tired on the court. I have the impression of having found this “tennis physicality” by playing several matches in a row here (four), explained Wozniacki at a press conference. I can still improve, that’s what I’m working on now that I’m taking more time between two tournaments. I want to be faster, agile, serve better. »

In the quarter-finals, she will face world number 1 Iga Swiatek. The Pole was quick in the quarter-finals against Yulia Putintseva (79th in the world) with a match concluded in two sets (6-1, 6-2) and 1h12. Out of her eight service games, the Kazakhstani gave up six to Swiatek who got 14 break points.
