Carolina Marín advances to Swiss Open semifinals with victory over Kim Ga Eun

MADRID, 22 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish badminton player Carolina Marín qualified this Friday for the semifinals of the Swiss Open, a Super 300 category tournament of the BWF World Tour, thanks to her 21-19 and 21-18 victory against the South Korean Kim Ga Eun .

On Court 1 of the St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Marín started 1-5 down but remained calm. Thus, the Huelva player was more incisive and came back to be five points ahead (14-9, 19-14, 20-15), on the verge of settling a first set that at times became complicated again.

Ga Eun varied her attacks, both from sides and heights, and closed her disadvantage. However, at 20-19 she attempted a subtle ‘drive’ grazing the net and the midfielder finally stayed in her half of the court. After the scare, Marín showed again that he is unstoppable when he picks up the pace.

At the beginning of the second set, the Andalusian went 7-2 in a flash. She then reacted to her opponent with four points in a row, returning to the battle (8-8) and even going ahead on the scoreboard (11-13), after a defensive hit that touched the net tape and fell on the other side.

That play encouraged Ga Eun, who made a growth spurt (12-15, 13-16) and then withstood several replies from Marín. He made it 17-17 for the Andalusian with a shot to the back of his rival, an area where he had seen his weakness. That’s why he looked for it to generate the point at 19-18 and also at 20-18.

And without delay, with patience to move the South Korean with mid- and long-range shots, Marín caused Ga Eun to make a mistake on a defensive hit and the pen went too far along the baseline. After 55 minutes of the match, the Huelva player thus achieved her ticket to the semi-finals.
