“Carlos Sainz has been diagnosed with appendicitis and will require surgery. The Ferrari family wishes Carlos a speedy recovery,” said the Italian team about the Madrid native, who finished third last Saturday in the Bahrain Grand Prix and who began to feel unwell last Wednesday, so he had to leave the Jeddah Circuit. Despite this, he participated in free practice on Thursday and finished sixth in the first session and seventh in the second.

The Spanish driver himself confessed after these tests that he had spent “a very difficult last 24 hours” and that, “without a doubt”, it had been his “most difficult day in a Formula 1 car on such a demanding circuit with a high G force.” . “Having an upset stomach and being sick is not ideal. I hope to be better on Friday and 100 percent by Saturday, but I need to get some rest now,” he added.

“Starting in FP3 and for the rest of this weekend, Sainz will be replaced by reserve driver Oliver Bearman. Oliver will therefore not participate again in this round of the F2 Championship,” Ferrari confirmed.
