The German Football Association is missing out on great hope for the future.
Since Monday there has been certainty – Can Uzun will not play for Germany, but for the Turkish national team.
The 18-year-old super-talented striker explained this in an exclusive interview with “Sky” after long speculation about his decision.
“I listened to my heart. Such a decision is not a career decision like changing clubs, but a decision of the heart. You have to feel the national team and here my heart and my gut said that Turkey was the right choice for me.”, The Nuremberg jewel provides insights into the reasons for its decision.
Völler and Rettig couldn’t change Uzun’s mind
The DFB, especially DFB sports director Rudi Völler and managing director Andreas Rettig, had been trying to secure the services of the shooting star for months. Uzun, who was born in Regensburg, has already appeared 14 times for Turkey’s U17 and U18 teams.
According to the youngster, the intensive courting of his person was “a huge honor” – but the decision in favor of Turkey ultimately stood.
“My father was also very touched and honored. Rudi Völler was incredibly nice and respectful and also told me that I should listen to my heart and that no one would be angry if the decision didn’t go in favor of Germany. That was good to hear .”
In contrast to the DFB, Turkey is said to have promised Uzun a nomination for the A team.
Chance of a EM ticket is probably an additional incentive
An additional incentive for a decision in favor of Turkey is said to have been the prospect of a place in the Turkey squad for the upcoming European Championships in the summer. However, Uzun does not want to know anything about a “tactical” decision in view of his commitment to the Turkish association.
“As I said, it was a decision of the heart and I didn’t make any tactical considerations as to which national team might give me a better chance of winning the title or get better advertising deals. With the national team you play with your heart, it’s about fame and honor. There is nothing greater than becoming a football legend in your homeland. I will give everything and play proudly for Turkey.”
The Nuremberg homegrown player has put himself in the spotlight this season with extremely strong performances – the teenager has 15 goals and three assists in 23 competitive appearances for the club. Numerous top clubs are said to have already expressed their interest.
