Bayer Leverkusen took advantage of FC Bayern’s mistake and moved ten points ahead in the table after 24 matchdays. 1. FC Köln didn’t look like an outsider for a long time, but when they were outnumbered they were unlucky in front of the goal.

Bayer Leverkusen is taking a big step towards the German championship. In the derby at 1. FC Cologne, the league leaders won 2-0 (1-0) and thus extended their lead over FC Bayern to ten points. Cologne played outnumbered for a long time and defended themselves as best they could.

The crux of the game was the early dismissal of Cologne’s Thielmann (14th). The attacker unintentionally but violently kicked Granit Xhaka’s Achilles tendon with an open sole. Tobias Stieler showed the red card after consulting the video assistant. Last week, Xhaka was involved in a sending off when Mainz’s Jessic Ngankam also rudely fouled the Bayer strategist from behind.

Cologne was even lucky in the middle of the first half that another player, Eric Martel, wasn’t sent off the pitch. The youngster tackled Florian Wirtz badly, and Stieler left it with a yellow card (29th). With the majority, Leverkusen quickly took over the game and took the lead through Jeremie Frimpong (37th). The Dutchman used a cross extended by Patrick Schick at the far post.

But Cologne didn’t give up. Already in the opening phase, Dejan Ljubicic missed with a header from a promising position (10th). Shortly after the break, Sargis Adamyan hit the post (51′). Leverkusen didn’t pose a threat to the Cologne goal for a long time, but then struck ice cold. Alex Grimaldo made the decision with a deflected shot from close range (73′).
