Brundle thinks that Ferrari would have won even without Verstappen’s bad luck

The Red Bull Racing team had a disappointing race in Australia last weekend. Max Verstappen dropped out and Sergio Perez only crossed the line in fifth. The victory went to Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz and Martin Brundle thinks he would also have won if Verstappen had not dropped out.

Verstappen dropped out in Melbourne after just a few laps with braking problems. Sainz had already overtaken Verstappen when the Red Bull’s brakes started to smoke. The Spanish Ferrari driver then built up a nice lead and never relinquished the lead. It was expected that Sergio Perez could save the honor for Red Bull, but the Mexican was stuck in fifth place.

Ask

Former driver and current commentator Martin Brundle thinks that Ferrari would also have won without Verstappen’s failure. In his column for Sky Sports, Brundle explains this: “Afterwards, the question was whether Ferrari would beat Red Bull anyway. Sainz had already overtaken Verstappen, but the RB20 was showing signs of malfunction. Perez only finished fifth in the second Red Bull. He had a gap of about thirty seconds, before the Virtual Safety Car was deployed on the last lap. He also appeared to have some aerodynamic problems, because he had a good pace before that.”

Gut feeling

Brundle thinks the race would have looked different if Verstappen had not dropped out, but he does not think Red Bull would have won. The British commentator explains his views: “McLaren was still keeping close track of Ferrari on race pace, which suggests that Verstappen could have joined the fight. We will never know the answer, but my gut feeling clearly says that it would be Ferrari’s day. “
