Brindisi-Taranto: the derby you don’t expect

It’s Palm Sunday. Festive day that precedes Easter. You could break away from everything and dedicate yourself to something else but when the calendar proposes an Apulian derby, the charm of the challenge is invariably stronger than any family lunch or the religious rituals which over the years have often had to give way to a more pervasive and engulfing.

I therefore decide to travel with my usual and loyal regional coach and given the very convenient kick-off time, scheduled for 6.30pm, I can even afford the luxury of a quick lunch with the family before heading to the Messapian city . I arrive well in advance, about two and a half hours before hostilities, therefore with plenty of time for the usual excursion through the streets of the historic center and then along the seafront.

It’s such a pleasant afternoon that time passes very quickly without me realizing it, so I arrive out of breath at the “Fanuzzi” very close to the referee’s first whistle. I must confess that the fact that I didn’t expect anything exceptional on the eve of the match also contributed to my delay, considering the limitations for the away sector accessible only with a fan card and a home Curva Sud exhausted by Brindisi’s unseemly performance on the pitch, to say the least. . Once I set foot on the steps, however, I had to completely change my mind.

Truly a very lively and passionate atmosphere in the stands, starting from the away sector, there are 230 people from Taranto who populate their own section of the stadium, offering an important view thanks to the many flags in the wind, many smoke bombs and torches, many of which are thrown in field. The support is literally constant for the entire ninety minutes and there are countless choruses of teasing towards those across the street, despite the fact that in the recent past they had been linked by a friendship with some Ionian groups, evidently not completely and not digested by everyone considering that at the first chance it turned into hatred. Beyond this and in defiance of the restrictions that have cut off a good portion of Tarantino ultras still recalcitrant to sign this Fidelity Cardit must be said that their performance was truly excellent in terms of numbers and audacity.

Similarly, one can only say good things about the Curva Sud Brindisi, as has already been reiterated several times in our visits to their city. With a team returning to professional football after decades, the failed championship that took place on the pitch is certainly not the best viaticum to encourage the passion of the locals. Yet the ultras have put together a series of exemplary and suggestive tests as on this occasion too. They interrupt the match with repeated throwing of smoke bombs onto the pitch and respond to yet another defeat with a performance above all expectations. Indomitable Curva Sud which was able to keep the numbers high and the passion alive in contrast to the events on the pitch. We can only pay them the most sincere congratulations for this season and at the same time wish them a speedy rise back here among the professionals where they deserve to be. On their part too, there is no shortage of chants against the people of Taranto and even a banner indicating those they consider the unworthy among their old associates in the opposite sector. Apparently they too already knew in advance how it would end, the only ones who could not foresee this beautiful evening of cheering and proud opposition were myself and the Observatory, whose restrictions had no impact on this beautiful derby.
