Botafogo Eyeing MLS Star Thiago Almada for Potential Transfer

Brazilian Serie A club Botafogo is interested in acquiring Atlanta United attacking midfielder Thiago Almada but are yet to send an official offer, sources briefed on the situation tell The Athletic.

Informal talks have suggested Botafogo would be willing to bid $20million, a number unlikely to tempt Atlanta, sources add.

Atlanta acquired Almada for an MLS-record inbound transfer fee of $16 million in 2022.

Globo first reported Botafogo’s interest. Thursday is the final day of Brazil’s primary transfer window.

Almada, 22, has been the subject of regular transfer talks over the last year, but few official offers. He is under contract through 2025.

The Argentine international was an MLS MVP finalist last year and is someone who could set a new MLS outbound transfer record, which currently stands at the $27million figure Newcastle paid to sign Miguel Almiron from Atlanta. Atlanta president Garth Lagerwey told The Athletic last year that Almada is “deserving” of the MLS record transfer.

Almada became the first active MLS player to win a World Cup, when he lifted the trophy as part of Argentina’s squad in 2022. He has four caps with Argentina.

The attacking midfielder had 11 goals and 16 assists in 31 regular season appearances last year.
