Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun will step down at the end of the year amid a broad management reorganization prompted by the planemaker’s safety crisis, resulting from the failure of a panel on a 737 MAX plane mid-air. flight in January.
The planemaker also said Stan Deal, chief executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, would retire, and Stephanie Pope would run that business. Steve Mollenkopf has been appointed as the new chairman of the board of directors.
Calhoun has been under pressure since the Jan. 5 incident, when a panel detached from an Alaska Airlines flight about 16,000 feet above the ground. The company faces heavy regulatory scrutiny and U.S. authorities have halted production as it tries to address safety and quality issues.
Last week, a group of U.S. airline CEOs requested meetings with Boeing officials to express concern about the crash of the Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9, saying it was a rare sign of frustration over the manufacturer’s and Calhoun’s problems.
The company is in talks to also buy its former subsidiary Spirit AeroSystems SPR.N.
The company’s crisis has frustrated airlines already struggling with delivery delays from both Boeing and rival Airbus, and the planemaker has been burning through more cash this quarter than expected.
“For years, we’ve prioritized moving the plane around the factory over getting it right, and that has to change,” Chief Financial Officer Brian West said last week.
The company’s main rival, Airbus, recently secured orders for 65 planes from two of Boeing’s biggest Asian customers, in what some saw as a sign of executives’ concern about Boeing.
