Ben Simmons misses rest of season due to back problems

NEW YORK (AP) — Ben Simmons will miss the remainder of the season, the third straight year the former All-Star has ended a season prematurely due to back problems.

The Brooklyn Nets announced Thursday that Simmons will use the remainder of the season to consult with specialists and determine a treatment for a pinched nerve in his lower back. The discomfort caused him to be sidelined twice in the current campaign.

Simmons was limited to 15 games this season. He missed 38 in a row during one stretch and has missed the last five.

“Simmons, along with his representatives and the Nets medical staff, are discussing with numerous experts the best course of action to give him the best chance at long-term health,” the team said.

The Australian, first selection in the 2016 draft, closes the season with averages of 6.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 5.7 assists. He has only played 57 games and has not had a full season since the Nets acquired him in a trade with Philadelphia at the close of the transfer market in 2022, an operation in which James Harden was sent to the 76ers.

Simmons has one year and about $40 million left on his contract.
