The Scot, however, continues to give himself a chance with his victory in the first round at Indian Wells and after which he admits that the youth game today is very different from that of a few years ago. How do you face those encounters? Do you consider yourself a kind of “mentor” to them?

Andy Murray This edition started Indian Wells with a very gratifying victory that he needed so much to unblock a situation of stagnation in which there has been so much talk about his withdrawal. However, the Scot has arrived in the United States to continue with his firm belief that love is power. In view of David Goffin could, although his next rival will be Andrey Rublev, a pretty hard stone in your path. Even so, the former world number 1 faces the tournament with enthusiasm and with things clear. In statements to Tennis Channel, Murray talked about his best assets and what he needs to do against these big hitters we have today. In addition, he gave the name of the players he most likes to watch and the role he assumes as a “mentor” to the young people on the circuit.

– Very fast conditions compared to other years

“It has been strange for me to win a quick match like this. The conditions here are very different. “I have always suffered a lot at this place during my career, but the track is definitely faster this year.”

– Your game strategy in Indian Wells

“I think that since the court is very unstable here, the bounce of the ball is very high and you should try to use that to your advantage. I’m a very flat hitter compared to many players, but I have the ability with my forehand to play with a lot of angles and with a lot of height to push them back. Sometimes it is easy and tempting to want to finish the points, but in reality you have to be a little more patient, use the height and let the track do a little of the work for you.”

– How to play against today’s young people?

“I try to watch as much tennis as I can. It’s not easy when I’m at home because I have four small children, but I love watching it. The game has changed a little bit in the last five or six years in the way guys hit the ball now. Many people download and that wasn’t the case when I started my career. I’m trying to find different ways to make that difficult for them and that’s where I have to use my game and my strengths to try to make it difficult for them. I don’t want to hit the ball as hard as them or face them as much, I need to use my variety, use my cut and height to get them out of their comfort zone.”

– His favorite players to watch: Alcaraz and Iga

“I love watching Alcaraz because of the way he plays. He has a lot of variety and strength. He always tries and it doesn’t always work out, it’s like he makes mistakes and that’s also something I enjoy watching. You never know who will come next. I’ve always liked watching Monfils too. And as for the women, I love watching Iga, I think she is brilliant to watch, she is my favorite player.”

– Do you consider yourself a mentor for young people?

“Not necessarily. When I started on the circuit, I was very excited to play there, but the locker room is a bit of a scary place. You don’t actually know any of the players and it can be a little intimidating at times. I remember the players who were very kind to me when I first came in and how much that meant to me, but I also remember the ones who weren’t so kind, and that was difficult. When you’re young and you have idols who you’ve seen on TV and they’re being horrible to you, it’s not easy. That way, if a player is going through difficult times, you will always wish them the best and keep them positive.”
