Belgium’s Draw Against Ireland and the Tough Choices Facing Coach Tedesco against England

Belgium achieved an unconvincing draw against Ireland (0-0). Former players Marc Degryse and Jan Mulder discussed several choices they think coach Domenico Tedesco should make against England.

At the end of the match, a lively discussion took place between the analysts of VTM on Tedesco’s choice to do so many rotations. “Against Ireland it’s useless, against England you can see what the players are worth”, considers Jan Mulder. “A Vermeeren (starter this Saturday, nda) should be lined up against England. He has much more potential than Tielemans.”

Marc Degryse then gave his opinion; “Being ready in June, Vermeeren won’t make it. He plays so few minutes at Atlético, he is no longer the Vermeeren of last season. With so little playing time, you can’t be at in better shape.”

Perhaps we should also review expectations. “We can’t expect him to be preferred over other midfielders at the Euro. Onana and Mangala played all the qualifying matches and are better placed in Tedesco’s hierarchy. And then he De Bruyne will still come back.”

Degryse therefore does not expect Vermeeren on the pitch during the next match. “I would be surprised if he starts against England on Tuesday and plays two internationals in three days, after barely playing for three months.”
