Eight games still separate Bayer 04 Leverkusen from their first championship, and with a ten point lead over FC Bayern, the title is getting closer and closer. And also the farewell to successful coach Xabi Alonso? He is traded at Liverpool FC and FC Bayern, but still has a contract with the Werkself until 2026.

Florian Wirtz’s runs even a year longer. The German international answered the question of whether Xabi Alsono’s departure would affect his career at Bayer clearly. “I don’t tie my path to his,” Wirtz said in one Spiegel-Interview (Saturday). “It’s extremely important to me that I have such a good relationship with him. But of course we decide about our future independently of each other.”

He created the best Leverkusen team I have ever experienced.

Like the offensive player, goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky also hopes that Xabi Alonso will stay beyond the season, as he explained to the English media after Finland’s 1:4 defeat in the European Championship play-offs against Wales. The 34-year-old wouldn’t begrudge the Spaniard a change. “Nobody would be angry or object if he won the Bundesliga and decided to take a different path.”

Regardless, Hradecky attests that the 42-year-old has brought a mentally strong spirit with him from the top clubs. And: “He created the best Leverkusen team I have ever experienced.” It was “hellishly difficult to play against us.”
