Some 950 fighters from the four corners of the province competed during the 2024 Provincial Judo Championship. Baie-Comeau was able to count on 16 of its judokas who returned home with several medals and two championship titles.
“Our judokas learn to adapt to the different challenges presented to them,” said Robin Gagné, technical director at the Baie-Comeau Judo Club.
Even if some experienced “bittersweet” defeats, as Mr. Gagné explains, the Baie-Comois athletes “controlled their fight”, and this was for the majority.
Nine medals, including two Quebec champions, are among the highlights of this event held in Laval on March 23 and 24.
The Champions
Julien Vanson, after recovering from a long injury, won gold and became the new Quebec champion among recreational seniors under 81 kilos.
On the side of Masters women over 30, Caroline Lessard climbed to the highest step of the podium, thus becoming Quebec champion in her turn.
Her teammate, Julie Poitras, for her part climbed to the second step to decorate herself with silver. This was her second medal as she also won silver in her ground bout (Ne Waza).
Other results and highlights
The youngest judoka, Thelio Talbot won the silver medal in the U12 category. On the U14 side, Raphaël Vallée and Cadel Talbot both won silver in their respective weight categories.
For the U18 division, Liliane Trotier and Samuel Roberge-Poitras each obtained a bronze medal in their own category.
Caroline Lessard, communications manager for the Club, would like to mention that the U14 athletes, Zoé Deschênes, Sara Soucy, Olivier Poulin, Raphaël Massé and Vincent Trotier “all gave their opponents a hard time”, even if They failed to climb onto the ranking platform.
The U16 judokas, Charlotte Roberge-Poitras, Rosalie Trotier, Machiel Talbot and Alexis Brassard, for their part, exhausted their reserve of efforts, coming close to the winners’ platform for some.
On April 20 and 21, the 2024 Eastern Canada Championship in New Brunswick as well as the 2024 Canadian Open Championship in Montreal are on the calendar of the Baie-Comeau Judo Club.
