Azzurri Excels at Para-Archery World Championship with 2 Gold, 6 Silver Medals and Passes to Paris Paralympics

The Azzurri finished with 2 gold, 6 silver and a fourth place and six passes to the Paris Paralympics

Expectations were very high given the Azzurri’s winning tradition in Paralympic archery. And certainly the technical director Willy Fuchsova can only say he is satisfied with the performance of his group, also made up of several debut athletes. Expectations therefore maintained, considering that Italy closed the Para-Archery World Championship in Pilsen, Czech Republic, scoring 2 gold, 6 silver and a fourth place. An excellent result that brings Italy to second place in the medal table behind China (6 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze) and ahead of another battleship like Turkey (2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze).

Passes for Paris 2024

If the six finals played had had a different outcome on the last day of competition, it would have been the Italian archers who would have looked down on everyone. But there is no need to worry about it, given that to this large haul of medals we must add the 6 passes for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games obtained in the first days of the competition: two in the women’s open recurve thanks to Elisabetta Mijno and Veronica Floreno , one in the men’s open recurve with Stefano Travisani, one in the men’s open compound with Matteo Bonacina, one in the women’s W1 with Asia Pellizzari and one in the men’s W1 thanks to Paolo Tonon. Qualifying for France was the group’s first objective and, from this point of view, everything went according to expectations. The only regret, to be honest, is the failure to qualify in the women’s compound open: a pass that was in the cards for Italy, but which did not arrive despite the efforts of the Tokyo bronze medalist Maria Andrea Virgilio and the other Italians Eleonora Sarti and Giulia Pesci. In fact, today Italy could compete in Paris not only in the individual of the three categories but also in the mixed team event of the open recurve and, for the first time in its history, in the mixed W1. At least one female pass in the compound will therefore be necessary to be able to compete in the mixed team event also in this division. The opportunity to achieve this is within reach and now imminent: the European Paralympic Championships which will be held in Rotterdam from 14 to 20 August.

Iridescent pods

Returning to the news, there were two highlights that led to the world title. In Saturday’s finals Matteo Bonacina and Matteo Panariello became world champions respectively in the compound open and among the visually impaired 1 (blind): the former beat Macqueen (GBR) 141-139 in the final and the latter Newsbery (Aus) 6-0. In the visually impaired 2/3 category, the European champion Daniele Piran won silver, beaten in the final by Prowse (GBR) 6-2. Today, on the final day of the world championship, as evidence of the competitiveness of the group, six more finals: five concluded with silver and one with a fourth place. The bête noires for the Azzurri were China and the hosts the Czech Republic. In W1 Dalia Dameno and Asia Pellizzari were stopped by China (Chen, Zhang), winning 144-122; in the W1 mixed team Asia Pellizzari and Paolo Tonon lost to the Czech duo (Brandtlova, Drahoninsky) 145-133. Same fate in the W1 men’s doubles, with Maurizio Panella and Paolo Tonon finishing in fourth place after the defeat against the Czech Republic (Drahoninsky, Davidek) 139-133. Asia Pellizzari takes the W1 individual silver, surpassed by the Chinese Lu Zhang, author of a world championship bordering on perfection: the challenge ends 132-124 for the Asian. The other two silver medals came in the open recurve: in the women’s doubles, Elisabetta Mijno and Enza Petrilli – who on the first day of competition had set the new world record on 144 arrows with 1217 points, breaking the previous one of 1184 – were stopped in final from China (Wu C., Wu Y.) only after the play-off: 4-5 (15-17). China also punishes Italy in the mixed team final: the duo that won silver at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo composed of Elisabetta Mijno and Stefano Travisani stops in front of the shots of Wu and Zhao who close the match 5-1. Overall, these are defeats that do not make a World Cup where Italy was able to play an absolute leading role any less sweet. The Azzurri can therefore face the continental event in Holland convinced that they can achieve other medals and above all that they can secure other tickets for Paris.
