Away games will be key for Caen Basket Calvados in Pro B race

The first four days of the second phase reveal two major elements in the upper group. On the one hand, four teams in the top 5 come from group B, the one in which Caen Basket Calvados played in the first part of the season. On the other hand, 17 of the 20 matches played so far have been won by home teams.

Travel will be decisive

Should we deduce from this that the team which will reach Pro B will come from Pool B and will have managed to win the most matches on the road? This would be a quick task as far as the first hypothesis is concerned. The second, on the other hand, is not far from becoming obvious.

There are six games left, the team that does best away from home will advance… provided they are full at home.

Stéphane Eberlin, coach of Caen BC

Refueling at home, Caen knows how to do it. At the Palais des Sports, matches are rarely close – unlike elsewhere – and Quimper saw this to its cost, Friday March 22, 2024 (89-65). “When the opponent is caught by the throat, he has difficulty finding resources with more than 4,000 people pushing behind us,” observes Stéphane Eberlin. We have the merit of continuing to press on. » The CBC has fourteen victories in a row at home.

“Don’t set external limits”

There remains the more thorny question of travel. If the Caennais occupy third place in the provisional ranking, one point behind Toulon and Avignon, they have played only one match away from home. This means that four of the last six matches will be played away from the comforting Palais des Sports.

They say: Caen is struggling away. We have six wins and eight losses. It’s not great, but it’s not that far from the others. You shouldn’t set external limits for yourself. You have to go there with a lot of conviction and determination.

Stéphane Eberlin

The only trip made by Caen in the upper group ended in a heavy setback to Tours (86-74), which nevertheless lost its three other matches. However, three away matches in a row are looming in Chartres, Tarbes and Loon. “We have to go there with the knife between our teeth and with the desire to make a physical impact, as we do at home. We didn’t do an away series. It is time.”

Optimize recovery

The Normans will spend the week among themselves. “We’re on a commando mission. » They will leave for Chartres this Monday March 25, 2024, the day before the meeting between the two teams who share the same record. They will take off immediately for Tarbes and will not return until Saturday morning, the day after the sixth match. The CBC will leave on Monday April 1 for Loon-Plage.

The club is making the effort. We’ll just be between us, that’s good. But this organization was above all linked to a concern for recovery.

Stéphane Eberlin

The room for error promises to be limited for the Caennais over the next six days. We certainly won’t have to lose more than one match. Caen is not master of its destiny, one point behind Toulon and Avignon, teams it will no longer face. The looming series of three trips will be crucial. “What is important is that after these three matches, we are still in the race. » So one victory at most from the leader.
