Audrey Tcheuméo’s Disappointing Loss at Grand Slam in Tbilisi

A bronze medal would have already left her wanting more. But she won’t even have the luxury of being satisfied with that. Audrey Tcheuméo lost against the German Alina Boehm on Sunday at the Grand Slam in Tbilisi, in her fight for bronze in the -78kg category. The Frenchwoman had a very clean start to the fight but saw doubt set in when the debates dragged on. She finally gave in during the golden score, like her first defeat of the day against Yelyzaveta Lytvynenko, in a fight that she finished without solution and physically blunted.

If she had been able to raise her head in the repechage against the Slovenian Metka Lobnik, winning by ippon, the very promising German, double reigning European champion, brought her back to earth. It’s a real setback for the 33-year-old native of Bondy, who is fighting at a distance with Madeline Malonga in the race for selection for the Paris Olympic Games. Her compatriot now seems to have an avenue ahead of her, before fighting in Antalya on March 31. The pressure will also be immense. It’s up to her to resist it better.
