World champion Andreas Brehme has been buried in Munich. Many high-profile mourners said goodbye to Brehme, who died at the age of only 63. His friend and close companion Rudi Völler gave an emotional eulogy.

After his unexpected death, numerous companions said an emotional farewell to Andreas Brehme (†63). The soccer world champion was the first player from the German 1990 World Cup team to die of a cardiac arrest on February 20th. The urn burial took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Ostfriedhof in the Giesing district of Munich.

Brehme’s close friend Rudi Völler gave an emotional eulogy in front of 300 mourners and said goodbye. According to “Bild”, Völler ended his speech in tears with emotional words: “I would have needed this shoulder on the morning of February 20th. I miss you.”

With this, Völler recalled the relegation duel between the two clubs Leverkusen, for which Völler stormed, and Kaiserslautern, where Brehme was captain. Before the 1996 season finale it was clear that one of the two world champions and his club would have to be relegated. The game ended 1-1 and Kaiserslautern had to go to the second division. After the game, Brehme cried on the shoulder of his friend Völler, who tried to comfort him.

In his eulogy, Völler also remembered the moment when he received the terrible news of his death. The DFB sports director was, like him, in a trance when Lothar Matthäus informed him of the tragedy on a DFB trip to Weimar.

“Andi cannot be reduced to the penalty”

Völler emphasized that Brehme was much more than the winning goal scorer in the 1990 World Cup final: “Andi cannot be reduced to the penalty. With his inimitable laugh he could lighten up even the worst mood.”
