Hello everyone!

Welcome to episode number 60 of the MORABITOBRASS podcast, a place where we will talk about music, brass instruments and their pedagogy, all under the focus of the great teacher, former CSO tuba player for more than 44 years, Mr. Arnold Jacobs.

I am Christitan Morabito, professional horn player, pedagogue and Argentine lecturer living in Spain.

If you want to know all the activities I carry out, I invite you to visit my website morabitobrass.com… and now… let’s begin…

These are analogies that can be used by musical instrument players with problems with blockages, tremors, sound production, etc.

The game/sport of baseball is played by throwing a ball with great force and another person who must receive it, waits for the arrival of the ball and hits it with a bat. In other words, they are two opposing forces colliding at a point. (Not recommended!). In tennis, when serving, we throw the ball high and then hit it with the racket with great force (something recommended) since they are not two opposing forces but the collision of said forces is less.

Javelin throwing is a sport or competition in which the javelin is thrown, already in our hand, with great force from a zero point (highly recommended!) since there are no opposing forces.

It’s just one moving forward. In the game of bowling, you hold the ball with your fingers, move forward with a smooth movement and, by moving backwards and then moving forward a few steps, you release the bowling pin from your fingers. (Highly recommended!!).

There is also a game that I really like for this type of analogy, which is Curling and is played on an ice floor, where the players release the stones and after a short race, their partners clean and smooth the path, so that These get as close to the target as possible.

By releasing our air and our vibrations, after we have inhaled large amounts of air, we will create a high quality sound production, whether we play soft or loud, slow or fast. It is a circular movement that we must think about when inhaling and then exhaling without thinking about braking at any extreme so that the bellows activity is continuous and relaxed.

Like when we yawn, we don’t even think about what we’re doing, we just inhale large volumes of air and then release it in the same relaxed way. When playing our instruments we have to create the habit of breathing deeply and relaxed as if we were yawning with our mouth half open without producing too much noise while doing so. Analogies often help us realize that things have to be simple in our minds and not complicate our lives by trying to manage other issues such as muscles and tissues that we really cannot control.

Let’s use our imagination and build in our minds ideas that help us simplify our approach so that everything is much easier and more pleasant without suffering just by trying to make a piece of metal (the instrument itself) sound a little better.

All the time we have the possibility of observing many of these analogies that happen around us and how well they can work for us.

I hope this information clarifies and/or demystifies many of the topics that we have often learned wrongly!

Thank you very much for your interest and for the likes, subscriptions and comments on spotify, ivoox, apple podcast and YouTube, to whose channel I encourage you to subscribe, activating the bell to stay up to date with everything I share with you.

As always, we see each other every Tuesday and every Friday at 12:30 p.m., Spanish time.

Thank you very much to all…
