María Planas, one of the most relevant figures in the history of Spanish women’s basketball, has donated to the FEB Museum her first League champion’s cup, which she won in the 1977-78 season at the head of Barcelona’s Picadero. The FEB Museum has experienced an endearing day, with the visit of María Planas, one of the most relevant figures in the history of Spanish women’s basketball, who donated an original trophy to the Spanish Basketball Federation: the first champion’s cup. of the League, who won the 1977-78 season at the head of the Picadero de Barcelona. Throughout her entire technical career, María Planas, wife of the honorary president of the ACB Eduardo Portela, won a total of 7 Women’s League titles, as well as another 7 Cup titles, a figure that makes her the most successful coach in the history of Spanish women’s basketball. Furthermore, between 1978 and 1985 she was the senior women’s coach, whom she led in several of the first international championships that Spain attended.
The 7 League titles won by María Planas, the cup for the first of which is the one she donated to the FEB Museum, are divided between three teams: Picadero Barcelona (1978, 1980 and 1981), Tortosa (1987, 1988 and 1989) and El Masnou (1990).
María Planas: “I am very excited that the FEB will keep it forever”
The former coach and member of the Spanish Basketball Hall of Fame and the FIBA, has assured that “I am very excited that it is the FEB that will keep from now on and forever this cup that greatly marked my career as a coach. I remember that it was very difficult for us to win that League.” And she explained that she wants this donation “to be my personal recognition of the work of the Federation for women’s basketball and also of the love it has transmitted to me in recent years.”
