Shock in the Egyptian Premier League. A medical emergency occurred in the duel between Modern Future FC and Ittihad on Monday.
Ahmed Refaat (30) suffers a cardiac arrest in the middle of the game. Only substituted after an hour at Modern Future FC, the seven-time Egyptian international suddenly collapsed in the 88th minute. Doctors immediately rush over and take care of him. When they realize the seriousness of the situation, the game is immediately stopped.
Critical condition
After initial treatment, Refaat is taken to the hospital. His condition remains unstable. He is in the intensive care unit and is being closely monitored. According to a press release from his club, it was a miracle that he survived the collapse. Because apparently his heart hadn’t beaten for over an hour.
The club continues: “After resuscitation attempts at Zamzam Hospital near the stadium, his heart rate gradually increased. Nevertheless, his condition remains critical, which means he cannot be moved yet.”
Already several shocking moments
Refaat is not the first footballer to collapse on the pitch. During the 2021 European Championship, the Dane Christian Eriksen (32) suffered a cardiac arrest and had to be resuscitated. Thanks to an implanted defibrillator, he was able to continue his career.
However, the collapse of ex-FCZ player Raphael Dwamena (†28) ended tragically. He died last November after suffering a cardiac arrest during the game. An implanted defibrillator was supposed to help him too – but he had it removed again. (bir)
