A match to write history, to move forward in the competition and take a step forward for the new Champions League. It’s on stage tonight Bayern-Lazio, valid for the second leg of the round of 16 of the competition. In the first leg, the Biancocelesti won 1-0 and want to defend this advantage at all costs. From next season the top tournament for European clubs will have a completely different format in which 32 teams are expected. However, four more are added to these according to some requirements already made known by the European football body. One of these concerns the path of the various federations in the competitions Uefa this season and a success for Lazio would allow theItaly to pull ahead of Germany.

He ranking

Currently, our country is at the top of the UEFA ranking for the path of our teams in European competitions. Up to now, in fact, 7 out of 7 teams have remained involved in the UEFA tournaments with no club yet eliminated. In total the points are 15.571while the Germans are second at 14.500. Closing the podium is theEngland which, with six out of eight teams, is at altitude 13.875.

How the next Champions League works

As announced, the next Champions League will no longer have the group stagebut a round-robin of 36 teams which will, however, be divided into four groups of 9. Each of these will play in total 8 games (four at home and four away), but not with all the clubs, but only with two from each tier. These will be decided on the basis of the club ranking of the qualifiers and already in the single group it is possible to face teams from the same federation as long as it has at least four. In the single group, however, only one match between teams from the same championship will be possible. Ultimately, they will not exist relegations in Europa League o Conference League.

An extra place in the Champions League: how it works

From this year, four more teams will be able to qualify for the Champions League. To do this, UEFA has announced the methods by which the federations will be able to obtain an extra place in the next European competitions. There are three ways Italy can gain an extra place in the new competition. The first would be to get fifth place in the ranking for nations. The second would imply the victory of the Europa League or the Champions League of a club that would not qualify for European competitions thanks to the championship. Finally, the third way to enter concerns the ranking per federaizone, which rewards only the top two with the highest scores. To give an example: last year Italy finished in second place and would have obtained one more place. This year, however, it is currently earlier.
