The Italian embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute in Washington hosted the screening of the documentary “A coach like father: the incredible story of Sandro Gamba”, by the Italian director Massimiliano Finazzer Flory. The documentary, we read in a note, tells the life and exploits of Sandro Gamba, from the trauma to his hand due to a barrage of bullets during the Second World War, to his career as one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time. , entered into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, one of the highest honors in world basketball. “The film transcends the world of sport and offers important insights into the strength of the relationship between a mentor and his mentees,” noted Deputy Chief of Mission, Minister Plenipotentiary Alessandro Gonzalesin his opening speech.
The figure of Sandro Gamba, he added, is “significant not only for its resilience and determination, but also for its influence in the world of sport, and basketball in particular, not only Italian but international”. Thanks to the testimonies of Gamba himself and his players, among whom Dino Meneghin stands out, the film reconstructs the most significant moments of his career, such as the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The screening of the documentary, which is part of a three-hour tour dates including Miami (March 19) and New York (March 21), was preceded by video contributions from Danilo Gallinari, one of the NBA’s longest-serving Italian players, and Ettore Messina, an Italian assistant coach who followed in the footsteps of Sandro Gamba as his apprentice. The film was followed by a question and answer session with director Massimiliano Finazzer Flory.
