40th Villanova Trophy Sets New Records in Judo Competition

PORDENONE – Great success for the 40th Villanova Trophy, a historic event organized by the managers of the Polisportiva Villanova Judo since the early years of its sporting life. An edition that broke every previous record with 200 couples competing on the tatami set up on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th March at the Palazzetto dello Sport (PalaFlora) in via Peruzza 10 in Torre di Pordenone. This year the event opened its doors on Friday the 22nd with accreditation operations reserved for athletes and the draw of the race scoreboards. Also on Friday at the Palazen in via Pirandello in Pordenone, the European Seminar (EJU Kata Judges Seminar) aimed at match judges took place which concluded with the International Referee Qualification Exams. As many as 32 aspiring referees participated, of which 10 were examined for refereeing qualifications. The commission was chaired by Slavisa Bradic (Croatia), Monica Piredda (Italy), Trudie Michielsen (Sweden), Albreth Igor and Dimitri Nemegaire (Belgium). The international Judo-Kata event was divided into two events: the first on Saturday 23 March with the EJU Tournament Judo Kata and included in the European Judo Union calendar while the second on Sunday 24 March with the Grand Prix Italia and included in the calendar national team of the FIJLKAM Federation. Also on Sunday there was the awarding of the prestigious “Trofeo Villanova” Cup, reserved for the very young categories (athletes from the 2012-2013 season). Both tests constitute qualification tests for the next European and World Judo Kata Championships. New to the International Regulations of Kata competitions is the introduction of the Junior Under 18 category, which aims to increase international Kata activity to encourage generational change in the EJU ranking list. Therefore, the Giovanissimi Under 16 and Under 18 categories are added to the Junior/Senior Absolute categories. Satisfaction for the Villanova partnership for the first place of the new couple formed by Giada Casetta and Francesco Piva capable of conquering, among the applause of the Villanova crowd present en masse, a well-deserved Gold on their first official outing in the Junior Katame No Kata discipline of the Under 18 Grand Prix.

But the Villanova Trophy is not just “competitions”. There were also numerous collateral events associated with it that the National Kata Commission in collaboration with the Polisportiva Villanova Judo staged during the competition weekend. Among them, the children’s choir from the Rosmini school in Pordenone stands out. A packed PalaFlora was moved when they sang the Mameli Hymn. Guest of honor and testimonial maestro Cappelletti 10th Dan.

“40th beyond expectations, a real record for us and there is a lot of satisfaction” – admitted maestro Edoardo Muzzin – “The level of the couples competing was very high. This means that the Trophy is attractive to the continent. We – rejoices the founder of Polisportiva Villanova – are even more satisfied for having brought 7 couples competing as Polisportiva and we enjoy the gold won by Giada and Francesco on their first time together”.
