On Sunday, April 14th, the last game day of the 2023/24 NBA season will take place. The playoffs start the following Saturday, April 20th. Before that, eight teams will play for the last four playoff places in the Play-In Tournament introduced in 2021.
This will be played in knockout mode. This means that a single game decides the winner. The teams ranked seventh to tenth take part in the respective conferences in the East and West. The seventh meets the eighth and the ninth meets the tenth. The winner of the 7 vs. 8 game qualifies directly for the playoffs as the 7 seed, while the loser gets another chance to face the winner of the 9 vs. 10 game.
This year the Play-In Tournament will take place from April 16th to 19th.
The playoffs start just one day later. Here, too, it is initially divided into conferences. The first from the West plays against the 8 seed in the conference, the second place faces the seventh seed, etc. The game is played in best-of-seven mode, which means that four wins are needed to advance to the next round to reach. To win the championship, four series must be won – the first round, the Conference Semifinals, the Conference Finals and finally the NBA Finals.
