1. FC Köln Returns Home Optimistic After Training Camp in Spain

On Saturday, 1. FC Cologne travels back home. Then it’s about the game against FC Augsburg. Coach Timo Schultz sees his team well prepared for this after the training camp.

Jim Decker reports from the 1. FC Köln training camp in Algorfa (Spain).

The result was sobering, but shouldn’t count for much: 1. FC Köln concluded their training camp in southern Spain on Friday afternoon with a 2-2 draw in the friendly against UMF Breidablik. “There were a few processes that we rehearsed during the week,” said coach Timo Schultz mildly and explained: “So I wasn’t dissatisfied at all. But as the game went on we let our guard down a bit.”

As is often the case in the Bundesliga season so far. “We had guys with us who had five units under their belt,” Schultz tried to explain and in fact the test kick against the Icelanders shouldn’t be overestimated: the fact that right-back Benno Schmitz played as a six in midfield said it all.

Praise for Selke

There were at least warm words for striker Davie Selke, who was involved for around half an hour and left a good impression – and not just because he set up Damion Downs’ goal. “Davie has shown how dangerous and important he is. Let’s see how much he has in the tank for the Augsburg game,” said Schultz. On Easter Monday it will be again about points against the FCA, which should help the current penultimate team stay in the league.

And the training camp in general? “It served its purpose 100 percent,” said Schultz, who places particular emphasis on mentality and team spirit. “It was worth more than just training on the pitch,” emphasizes the coach. The FC entourage travels back to Cologne on Saturday and the team has a day off on Sunday. There will be two training sessions from Monday to Wednesday inclusive, after which all the national players who have been absent will be given the best possible preparation for staying in the league.
