Wayne Rooney’s Endorsement of Pep Guardiola and Potential Coaching Opportunities

Wayne Rooney’s experiences on the bench are not entirely fruitful. The former Manchester United legend as a player was recently dismissed as manager of Birmingham City after just 15 games. The baggage of two victories in fifteen matches was too poor. Without a team since then, the former English footballer does not close the doors to continue training on the benches, even in that of his eternal rival. “If Pep Guardiola came and asked me to be his assistant, I would go there!” Wayne Rooney declared on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast.

Even though Sampedor’s coach has been directing Manchester City, the Red Devils’ eternal rival, for several seasons, the English legend has no problem stating that “the best coach is Pep (Guardiola). You look at how he adapts, since how Manchester City play now is not the same as how they played four years ago.”

Although, as Wayne Rooney stated in said talk, “the way the game has developed is strange. I saw one of our games against Liverpool about 15 years ago, and the difference between how it was played then and how it is played now is enormous”, the former Birmingham City coach highlights Pep Guardiola’s ability to adapt and make Manchester City a championship team: “He keeps making subtle changes, and then you see everyone else trying to do the same.”

One of those coaches who, in Wayne Rooney’s opinion, owes a lot to his time on the local bench at the Etihad Stadium is Mikel Arteta. The now Arsenal coach spent several seasons at Manchester City, serving as Pep Guardiola’s assistant. For Wayne Rooney, a crucial stage in the San Sebastian native’s development as a coach. “You see what (Mikel) Arteta is doing now and I firmly believe that a lot of that is from learning what (Pep) Guardiola was doing,” said Wayne Rooney in ‘Stick to Football’.

Although the former English player himself points out that “it is important to have your own principles and ideas of what you want to do, and that is what I have tried to do at Derby County, DC United and Birmingham City”, Wayne Rooney himself recognizes that “unfortunately it didn’t work.” Waiting for the doors of a bench to open again for the Mancunian legend, he opens them himself at Manchester City.
