Buenos Aires: Wawrinka clears the first hurdle
Stan Wawrinka (ATP 60) prevailed in the first round of the ATP 250 tournament in Buenos Aires against local Pedro Cachin (ATP 74) 6:7 (4:7), 6:1, 6:2. The 38-year-old was the better player after losing the opening set at the latest, took advantage of 7 of his 12 break opportunities and fended off all 5 of the Argentine’s break opportunities. In the round of 16, Wawrinka will face the Chilean Nicolas Jarry (ATP 21), who enjoyed a bye in the first round. The Spanish world number 2, Carlos Alcaraz, will also be serving at the clay court tournament in the Argentine capital.
Ruud and Shelton come to Geneva
The first two flagships of this year’s edition of the Geneva Open (May 18th to 25th) are known. Casper Ruud and Ben Shelton will play in Geneva a week before the French Open. The 25-year-old Norwegian Ruud won the clay court tournament in 2021 and 2022 and can now call himself a three-time Grand Slam finalist. The American Shelton, who is four years younger, made headlines last year with his semi-final advance at the US Open.
