Wave of Intimidating Attacks on Rome’s Gay Center: Urgent Call for Education and Protection

Intimidating acts, again, against the Gay Center in Rome, headquarters of the Gay Help Line service 800 713 713. For months, a group of children have been responsible for sudden raids on the association’s headquarters, writings containing homotransphobic insults and threats and insults to volunteers and users. The last two episodes were caught on camera in recent days: a boy with a baseball bat in his hand caused damage to the Rainbow wall; a group of very young people shouted “faggots” using smoke bombs and then daubed the pavement at the entrance to the venue with homobitransphobic graffiti. «Attacks that present clear indicators of homolesbobitransphobic hatred, acted out in the pack. A method that we now recognize more and more frequently on the streets of our country. This time addressed to the Gay Center, a protection and support center for LGBT+ people”, they explain.

«The first reaction was fear, due to the fact of recognizing themselves as victims of a direct attack – declares Alessandra Rossi, coordinator Gay Help Line 800 713 713 -. The second is concern, because these acts are the result of a public discourse that increasingly incites hatred towards those who continue to be labeled as ‘different’ and therefore targets of violence.” And finally: «This confirms the urgency and importance of including education in affectivity and respect in educational paths, as the Gay Center has repeatedly requested by launching a specific petition. We ask for investments so that these behaviors can be prevented and every place where LGBT+ people are protected can continue to be a safe place.” The center filed a complaint.
