Austria’s women achieved their first victory in group six at the World Team Championships in Busan, South Korea. Sofia Polcanova, Liu Jia and Karoline Mischek clearly won their games in the duel with Kazakhstan on Sunday and celebrated a 3-0 win. For the ÖTTV men, however, it was their first defeat, against group favorites France they ended up losing 3-0.
In the women’s category, only Mischek gave a set, Polcanova and Liu remained flawless this time. This means that third place, which entitles us to advance to the intermediate round or the round of 16, is within reach. This can be secured with a win on Tuesday (5:00 a.m. CET) against Australia at the end of the group phase.
Robert Gardos and Daniel Habesohn each suffered 3-0 defeats against the French in group four. Andreas Levenko lost a 2-1 set lead against Simon Gauzy and lost 2-3. After wins against Australia and Algeria, it was the first defeat at this World Cup. The next opponent is Denmark on Tuesday (12 p.m. CET). The group winner advances to the round of 16, the second and third place teams play against each other in the round of 16.
