Veolia Towers Hamburg Adds New Strength with Billy Ray Ivey III

They fought their way through 38 competitive games with a small squad. For the final spurt in the Easycredit Basketball Bundesliga, Veolia Towers Hamburg have now upped the ante: Billy Ray “Brae” Ivey III (27) comes from the Spanish top league ACB.

The combo guard signed a contract until the end of the season, landed on Saturday morning with four suitcases and should start immediately after a successful medical check. He may be in the squad for the evening against the Rostock Seawolves (6.30 p.m., Dyn)!

“We deliberately took our time looking for another player,” says coach Benka Barloschky (36). “Because he should not only fit into our team in terms of sport, but also as a person. We believe we have now found the right candidate in Brae.”

Especially since top scorer Aljami Durham (25) has been playing with a wobbly ankle for three weeks and urgently needs a break. The advantage of Brae (1.87 meters) is that he can both replace Durham in the development position and also play next to him on the “two” as a shooting guard.

What makes the new Towers star tick?

Ivey comes from the surfer paradise of Huntington Beach in California. The city that football idol Jürgen Klinsmann (59) also chose as his adopted home.

Barloschky describes his qualities as follows: “He brings a versatile package. He is confident in handling the ball and exudes danger both when driving to the basket and from a distance. In addition to his offensive potential, he also has a good defensive motor and likes to get involved in defense.”

Sports director Marvin Willoughby already had Brae on the list at the end of 2023. He attracted attention as the top scorer at Lithuanian top club Juventus Utena with 14.4 points per game and a three-point percentage of 44.4 percent. But at that time Brae decided to move to Spain.

In the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, however, things were not relaxed for the yoga fan…

Coach Salva Camps (44) was fired at the end of January after seven bankruptcies in a row. Successor Fotis Katisikaris (56/Greece) received the NBA-experienced center Khem Birch (31/Canada) as an inaugural gift – and sorted out Brae. Up until then he had only played four games for Girona.

At Towers, too, the commitment brings more dynamism to the squad. Because Brae is the seventh foreigner. This means: Until captain Seth Hinrichs (30) has his German passport, one import player has to go into the stands. If Durham is canceled – no problem. When he gets fit again, coach Barloschky will have a difficult decision to make.
