Université de Montréal Carabins Badminton Teams’ Streaks End in Quebec Finals

The Université de Montréal Carabins women’s and men’s badminton teams lost their only meeting of the season in the Quebec final. The women’s and men’s teams respectively lost to McGill and UQAM 3-2. It is therefore streaks of 24 victories in a row for women and 22 for men which come to an end.

The weekend had started well for the women. In the semi-final, they defeated the Rouge et Or of Laval University 3-2. Note the victory in three sets of 19-21, 21-7 and 21-18 by Kalyanne Truong (Occupational therapy). However, it was the two duos composed firstly of Charlie Nguyen (Occupational Therapy) and Kelly Lam (Biopharmaceutical Sciences) and secondly of Esther Zuo (Medicine) and Jennifer Xa (Occupational Therapy) who made it possible to overthrow their Quebec rivals.

In the final, against McGill, Mary-Anne Ke (Pharmacy) in singles as well as the Lam-Zuo duo signed victories in three sets.

Earlier in the day, the men defeated McGill University 3-1 in the semi-final. Alexis Nadeau (Demography) and Quoc-Quyen Huynh-Bao (Medicine) won their doubles match in two sets of 21-11. The other two duels were won by forfeit.

In a tight final, Les Carabins won the first and third duels. Alexandre Racette (Dentistry) and Nicolas Nguyen (Software Engineering, Polytechnique) won their doubles duel 16-21, 21-14 and 21-19. Amir Jabbari (International business-project, HEC) beat his opponent 21-18 and 22-20.

The RSEQ university badminton season will conclude on the weekend of March 8. CEPSUM will host the finals of the mixed and individual championships. The Carabins, who finished first in the Quebec mixed rankings, will face McGill University in the semi-final, which finished fourth.

On the men’s individual side, Jabbari will have the opportunity to defend his championship won last year.
