Union Berlin’s points haul in the second half of the season is impressive. Rani Khedira explains the difference from the first half of the season.

Union Berlin is currently in fifth place in the second half of the season – ahead of German record champions FC Bayern Munich. The Iron Men are on the rise and are currently somewhat reminiscent of the team from the previous season. “We are acting more as a unit. Everyone is a little more subordinate to the success, to the team,” emphasized Rani Khedira.
The vice-captain also added: “Everyone is giving it their all, we are very disciplined. And we are also efficient going forward. We are currently actually taking advantage of the opportunities we have.”
Even if the Berliners aren’t completely convincing yet, the points tally looks more than reasonable. The lead over the relegation place, where Cologne currently sits, is eight points. Nevertheless, leader Christopher Trimmel warns: “You can’t be sure. Our mentality is such that we don’t believe that we’re through now. We continue to work and fight for every point. We have to do our work.”
Bjelica: “At the moment everything is going in the right direction”
Coach Nenad Bjelica also took the same line: “We are where we are because we scored well. At the moment everything is going in the right direction. But we have to keep working with focus.” Especially when you look at the remaining games, the eight points can easily seem deceptive. Because the big players like leaders Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich all still come to the Alte Försterei.
And yet Union can be quite satisfied with the second half of the season so far. The capital city team still has a long way to go to stay in the league, but the first big steps have been taken. There are still a few adjustments to be made, but the performance is currently sufficient to avoid falling into relegation trouble again. But since this season in Berlin-Köpenick, they also know how quickly things can go in the other direction.
