American Tennis Curse Continues at Roland-Garros as Taylor Fritz Falls to Casper Ruud

Andre Agassi therefore remains for one more year the last American to have reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros. It was in 2003 and since then, Parisian clay has been denied to his compatriots. 21 years later, Taylor Fritz (12th) failed to break the curse of Porte d’Auteuil and lost this Monday (7-6 [6]3-6, 6-4, 6-2) against Casper Ruud (7th), finalist of the last two editions.

Ruud takes the lead

Fritz, however, tried everything. With a game that has developed a lot since its beginnings and which no longer relies solely on a big serve, the Californian held his own against Ruud for a long time in the exchange, notably on a diagonal backhand, before concluding with a missile of right hit. Capable of unleashing winning shots from every corner of the court, Fritz did more than send Ruud into the ropes. But, like a Rocky in his old days, the Norwegian accepted and stayed in the match. Pushed into a tie-break, he admirably reversed the scenario by winning it while trailing 5-1.

This riot of energy cost him the second set against Fritz who did not decrease in intensity. Very smart who could predict the outcome of this meeting. The statistics were not in favor of the American who had only one victory in twelve confrontations with members of the top 10 in Grand Slams. But, he seemed not to care about the statistics as he continued to drop winning shots.

Fritz diminished

Until his adductors started to squeal a little too loudly. At 5-2 for Ruud, he requested a medical timeout to be manipulated off the court. If he managed to break to get back to 5-4, he moved significantly less well. And he once again let go of his serve to allow Ruud to lead two sets to one.

The last round was not up to par with the others. Ruud used his deep forehand to undermine Fritz with reduced mobility. The American lost to a double fault, giving way to a quarter-final between Casper Ruud and Novak Djokovic which will be the remake of last year’s final.
