In a podcast from “Ruhr News“The former boss of FC Bayern remembers his prison sentence for tax evasion. Ottmar Hitzfeld, who visited Hoeneß in prison early on, caused a surprise. In order not to miss the permitted visiting time, the former Munich coach even arrived the evening before.

Hoeneß: “That’s typical Ottmar Hitzfeld. I would never do that, I would just get up at six o’clock and maybe be late. But no, Ottmar spent the night there so that he could be at the prison gate on time.” Hitzfeld coached Bayern from 1998 to 2004 and again from 2007 to 2008. At the same time as Hitzfeld was in office, Hoeneß was first manager, then sports director and deputy chairman of the board. Together they won, among other things, the Champions League, the World Cup and five championships.

But the ex-Bayern coach surprised his former board not only with the extra overnight stay, but also with another gesture. As Hoeneß reports, Hitzfeld actually wanted to buy wine, but that was not allowed in prison. Instead, visitors could “bring two euros and then you can buy chocolate.” They both enjoyed these together.

In March 2014, the current honorary president of Bavaria was sentenced to a total of three years and six months in prison for tax evasion. He was released early from prison in 2016 and the remainder of his sentence was suspended on February 29, 2016.
