Ugo Humbert after his victory over Hubert Hurkacz: “Strong in the head”

“How do you feel after this victory?
I’m very happy because I learned from my last two defeats against him. There are two things I changed. First, I accepted that I sometimes wasn’t going to touch his ball on his serve. In Australia, it frustrated me a lot. So I brought it back to my next shift, I wasn’t into it. That’s why I was good in my commitments today (Saturday), I was quite relaxed, I served good areas. And the other thing was to go more forward, chain my shots, push him to make passing shots. In Melbourne, I hit well from the baseline, but he stayed on his line and handed the ball to me calmly. There, I put more pressure and I volleyed well.

You were also very realistic…
He had opportunities to come back to 5-5 in the first set and break the break in the second. I remained strong in the head. I finished very well on the last game. I’m happy. It’s a great win against last year’s winner. And then it’s nice to win like that in Marseille. I have good memories. I feel like this is where it all started with my first half (in 2019). I experienced lots of new things. Putting my name here is important to me.

“Beating the best in the world, I love that”

You never lose in the final…
Mentally, I am able to put myself in a good mood. I always tell myself that a final is not played, it is won. I relaxed throughout the tournament, I proved that to myself again.

And you have good statistics against members of the top 10 (10 wins, twelve losses)…
Since I arrived on the circuit, it’s something that has never scared me. That’s exciting. Beating the best in the world, I love that. I don’t have any complexes at all. At first, it was all fire in the way I played. There, I play solid. I know that against them we have to be able to make more exceptional shots. This is what I was able to do when I broke. Too happy.

Victory in Metz, final in Marseille, indoor suits you well…
These are conditions that I love, yes. I learned about it, on carpet! »
