U18 Holten Judo Team Competes in District Individual Championship, Secures Two Spots at West German Championships

(JTH) February 4, 2024 – The U18 of the Holten judo team started the competition year with great ambitions with the district individual championship in Mönchengladbach. In addition to two placements in the top three and thus qualification for the West German Individual Championships in Herne in two weeks, two athletes returned home with placements outside of the podium.

The disappointment was written all over the young judoka’s faces, and coach Finn Bittscheidt tried to console him: “It was the wrong weight class for Linus today. In the end, weight and strength made the difference today.” Linus Gertzen had to compete with 300 grams over 66 kg in the next higher weight class up to 73 kg with 16 fighters in a double knockout system. That was just difficult to do. After two fights he was eliminated. “Lennart implemented a lot of things from training, he fought well and was able to implement the tips well in the current competition, but overall there was a lack of experience.” Lennart Hagenguth competed with ten judoka in the -60 kg weight class and achieved Double KO system fifth place.

Two tickets for the West German Individual Championship

For Nico Enninghorst (-50kg), a win in a pool of two was enough to take first place and qualify for the West German team on February 17th in Herne. “He solved the task well,” said Bittscheidt. Eva Chernobyl (-52kg), who came second in a three-person pool, also secured her ticket for the West Germans with her silver medal. “They all performed well, they can all be happy with themselves. We will analyze the fights in training and continue working. There’s still something for everyone,” the coach remains optimistic.

U11 gains experience

The U11 gained experience at their district championship a day later at the same location. Of the three qualified, none made it onto the podium. But their coach, Jens Impelmann, is also satisfied: “They did well and one or two fights were very close. We’re building on that.” More information about the club on the homepage, on Facebook and on Instagram.
