Two suspects were arrested on Sunday and placed in police custody, Rennes public prosecutor Philippe Astruc told AFP.
According to the regional daily Ouest-France, which revealed the information, the two alleged attackers were arrested by the GIGN.
The attack took place during the night from Saturday to Sunday in the town of Saint-Thurial, 25 km south of Rennes, its mayor David Moizan told AFP.
“The reasons and circumstances of the altercation, in particular what happened before the events, have not yet been established”underlines the prosecutor.
Born in 1986, the injured person, who was hospitalized, “evokes the use of a baseball bat”, he said. His days are not in danger.
An open investigation
An investigation into intentional homicide and violence with a weapon was opened and entrusted to the Montfort-sur-Meu research brigade, added the magistrate.
The two victims “were friends”they were hit by a baseball bat and one of them “had a cardiac arrest”declared Mr. Moizan.
Residing in the neighboring town of Monterfil, the deceased “was 30 years old (…) he was a person very involved in community life, a young father who was going to become a father again in a few weeks.”
“The attackers are two brothers, they had already had altercations with other people but it remained at the verbal level”he said, adding that they lived in Saint-Thurial.
Mr. Moizan says “don’t believe in a chance encounter” between victims and their attackers. The municipality is “overwhelmed (…) by this unjustifiable act”he added.
