Toronto Blue Jays Reliever Erik Swanson Out Indefinitely After Son Hit by Car

Toronto Blue Jays reliever Erik Swanson will be out indefinitely after his four-year-old son was hit by a car and hospitalized Sunday in Florida, where the team is based.

Team manager John Schneider issued a statement Tuesday ahead of the team’s preseason game against the Detroit Tigers.

Erik Swanson’s son, Toby, was hit by a car on Sunday and was taken by helicopter to a nearby hospital, Mr. Schneider said.

Thanks to the incredible work of Clearwater first responders, Toby is on the road to recovery and surrounded by his family. Erik will be away from the team for a while, family comes first, the statement continued.

Our love, support and prayers are with Erik, [sa femme] Madison, Toby and the entire Swanson family. Out of respect for Erik and his family, we will not make any further comment on this matter.

The Blue Jays’ player development complex in Dunedin, Fla., is about seven miles from Clearwater, where the accident occurred.

Erik Swanson, 30, made 69 appearances for the Blue Jays last season. The pitcher had a record of 4 wins and 2 losses and an earned run average of 2.97.
