They eventually took the lead for the first time since the beginning of the game when Hopkins outran the defense for an easy layup, making it 55-53 with 4:59 left in regulation.

The Bayhawks regrouped and ultimately secured a triumph. This win was significant for coach William Russell, a Mervo graduate, who was especially satisfied with his team’s reaction to Lewis’ unexpected 3-pointer.

“We have put in a lot of effort to reduce our turnovers and find a way to secure wins,” he stated. “With a young team of only three seniors, it is always a challenging environment for us to compete in. I believe the turnovers ultimately hurt us in the end.”

“That was determination. I commend the hard work and perseverance of my team. They never backed down,” he stated. “It was a tough setback, emotionally draining, and we could have easily given up. But that’s not the mentality of these players. They have a true passion for basketball. I am extremely grateful for this victory – it means a lot to us.”

However, Steve Lewis’ last-ditch effort from the entire length of the court was deemed to have been released before time expired, resulting in an unexpected second overtime.

Ben Franklin’s record improved to 14-4 as they defeated Mervo (12-4), who suffered their first loss in the league after four victories.

The Bayhawks were surprised by the outcome, but managed to maintain their concentration on the objective. Junior guard Da’Von Johnson ensured that the Mustangs wouldn’t get another opportunity for a last-minute heroic move.
