The answer that one of Kanagawa Prefecture’s best minds came up with was a “15 or 30 degree lead” and a “60 degree tilt.” The baseball club at Tama Prefectural High School, known as a preparatory school, has baseball as its research theme. Tama High School considers baseball to be an academic subject, and is conducting research on ways to stop the decline in the number of baseball players and the impact of moving extracurricular activities to other regions. The theme selected by Ryosuke Inage was “What is the optimal lead position for a runner on second base on the running path from second base to home plate?”
An experiment was conducted on the relationship between second base lead position and time using 13 of the 16 club members. We focused on the lead position because the results showed that athletes who run faster in a straight line are not necessarily faster at base running. Inage explains.
“When taking the same lead, some players lost time when kicking third base depending on the size of their stride, while others were able to move around smoothly. We set three lead positions and looked at the difference in time. I compared it.”
In the experiment, three lead positions were set: 0 degrees, 15 degrees, and 30 degrees with respect to the straight line connecting second base and third base. 0 degrees is on the straight line connecting second base and third base. 15 degrees refers to a line where the angle between that straight line and a straight line drawn from second base toward left field is 15 degrees. In other words, a lead position of 15 degrees is behind 0 degrees (toward the left wing), and a lead position of 30 degrees is further back.

As a result of comparing the times, players who ran from second base to third base in less than 18 steps were fastest at a 30-degree angle. On the other hand, for athletes with 18 steps or more, 15 degrees is the fastest. The best lead position varied depending on stride size. Inage analyzes this as follows.
“Players with short strides, in this case players who take 18 or more steps from second base to third base, are able to make small turns, so they were able to smoothly go around third base without having to angle the lead position. On the other hand, players who take less than 18 steps For players with long strides, a 15-degree lead angle does not provide enough angle, making movement difficult when kicking third base. Setting the lead angle to 30 degrees prevented deceleration.
Another thing I noticed when running from second base to home plate was the angle of the body when kicking third base. Among the players on the team, the faster the baserunners, the more their bodies were tilted toward the pitcher. The angle of the fastest athlete was 56 degrees.
Therefore, the team adopted a practice in which a player stands near the third base coach’s box holding a dragonfly and runs from second base to third base to avoid being hit by the dragonfly and runs toward home plate. The angle of the dragonfly is 60 degrees. If you don’t hit the dragonfly, you’re running with your body tilted 60 degrees toward the pitcher.
The players at Tama High School did not play on strong teams during their junior high school days, nor were they blessed with good physiques. Since the probability of extra-base hits or consecutive hits is not high, I believe that the key to scoring is whether the runner on second base can return to home plate with one single hit. If you can do the best lead position and base running without losing speed, your chances of scoring will increase.
