Ángel Torres, the president of Getafe, has assured in an interview with the program ‘El Partidazo de la Cope’ that both Guardiola and Messi were close to signing.
Torres has referred first to the moment in which he considered signing Guardiola, then coach of Barça Atlètic, and how it all happened. “It was when we were in Europe. I went to the draw and Txiki was there [el entonces director deportivo del Barça] and he tells me that they were thinking about Laudrup to be Barça’s coach next year,” he began explaining.
And I said: ‘Well, I’ll take Guardiola.’ And Txiki answered me: ‘Well, talk to him and his brother.’ And in the VIP room at the airport the subject was discussed. But at the end of the season everything was rushed and instead of Laudrup they targeted Guardiola. But before this happened “I spoke to Guardiola and he was willing to come. He can explain it to you.”
The case of Messi
The president of Getafe has also explained the moment in which the transfer of Messi was planned. “I was with Laporta and the sports director, Zubizarreta, and the president called the coach, who objected because I don’t know who was out and said he would have minutes. But with Laporta we have a very good relationship and we were close,” he said.
“Our sports director at the time was Alfredo Duro,” Torres recalled. The president also pointed out that he has a special relationship with Messi: “I have at least 10 Messi shirts. Every season he sent me a t-shirt because he knew he was my idol. “I have always spoken well of him and he had the kindness to send me his shirt when I went to the Camp Nou.”
