The Fall of Paul Pogba: Four-Year Ban for Doping Scandal

Paul Pogba is fixed. Provisionally suspended since September 11 after his positive doping test for testosterone carried out on August 20, at the end of the Udinese-Juventus match (0-3) where he remained on the bench, the French international midfielder (30 years old, 91 caps) was given a four-year ban. The thirty-year-old’s career may have ended this Thursday, February 29.

Following his positive test, the 2018 world champion requested the analysis of sample B. It was carried out in October at the Acqua Acetosa laboratory in Rome in the presence of experts chosen by Juventus lawyers. The results being identical to those of the first sample, the transalpine sports justice process was put in place via NADO, the equivalent of the AFLD (French Anti-Doping Agency). Pogba was then the subject of a counter-analysis which revealed the presence of DHEA, a substance different from testosterone but which produces the same metabolites.

He admitted to having consumed a food supplement

Since the day he announced his positivity, Pogba has not deviated from his line, the one already set at the time by his agent, Rafaela Pimenta: “Paul never wanted to break the rules. » After the shock of the announcement, the player admitted, in front of Juve’s medical staff and some of its managers, to having consumed a food supplement recommended by a doctor friend in Miami, where he regularly spends his vacations.

The Italian anti-doping prosecution concluded its preliminary investigation in December and the request was heavy: four years of suspension. Or the penalty provided for by the World Anti-Doping Code for taking prohibited products. Requisitions followed by the Italian anti-doping court. Juventus said it “takes note” of this decision. The player’s entourage announced that the French international would appeal his suspension.
