The CPA Girona is reinventing

Reinvent yourself and fight to stay on top of everything. This is what the CPA Girona has done, which after the farewell of the historic Nuri Soler, premieres this weekend in the I Open Catalonia of shows that will take place in Fontajau, new coach (Juliana Giovanardi) and new choreographer (Manel Villarroya). It’s been a very busy few months, from creating a record on the fly and putting it into practice on the track, from weekends full of training. But the time has come and +++, the enigmatic choreography title that the European champions and world runners-up will defend this year, is ready to compete. “The reflection of my gold will awaken the desire to possess me. Don’t look at me! You’ll always want more and in the end, you’ll end up losing me”, says the short explanation that accompanies Saturday’s departure order in Fontajau.

This season the territorial championships have been extinguished from the calendar and the starting point will be given in Girona, this weekend, in what has been called Open Catalonia, a kind of preview of the Catalan championship. Small and large groups will compete on Saturday afternoon. In the majors there are eight records, three from Girona: that of CPA Girona, that of CPA Olot, during the last few years its great rival in all competitions (Mulla’t) and that of PA Maçanet (Mistake).

The reinvention of CPA Girona is led by Aldea choreographer Manel Villarroya, and Girona skater Juliana Giovanardi, the new coach. They have known each other for years, they don’t want to work together again. Giovanardi, when he left to study in Barcelona, left CPA Girona, where he had grown up with Nuri Soler, and spent two seasons with Aldea in small groups, under Villarroya. The choreographer has a lot of experience in individual and small groups, and now taste the beans for the first time. At 41 years old, he is a coach of the national team and also prepares teams and skaters from Cunit, Salou and Aldea, as well as CPA Girona. Giovanardi, 28, who works in the audiovisual world at Rakuten TV, also trains the Palau de Plegamans small group. Manel Villarroya has a very remarkable record with world and European titles.

“I have a very good relationship with Nuri (Soler) and Juliana and when they made me the offer, Nuri immediately told me to take it, who did not want his work for all these years to be lost and for the club to follow the line”, explains the coach and choreographer. Thus, from the “admiration” he has for the former coach of CPA Girona, he has proposed to keep alive the flame of that legacy “making sure that we can continue among the best, close to CPA Olot or whoever that stands out this season”. They put together a choreography “in three months, with Christmas in the middle” and after some complicated beginnings “two weeks ago we started to see the light”. Neither he nor Giovanardi hides that “we arrive at the Open fair” and that the objective is to have a shot at the Spanish championship. The reigning champions of the continent will be able to continue making the international leap, to Europe and the World Cup, there. A team that, by the way, not only debuts technicians, but 15 of the skaters are also new.

“We take it with great enthusiasm. Maybe it has to be a year of impasse but we will try not to be”, says Giovanardi. They don’t want to reveal anything about the new choreography until it premieres in Fontajau on Saturday. “My style is very different from Nuri’s, I come from small groups and the individual and I am used to enhancing this more, the individual technique”, confesses Villarroya, who spent last weekend training with the team in Palau 2, Tordera and Anglès. Hours had to be found anywhere to finish polishing the premiere of a reinvented CPA Girona.
