The Beckhams’ Super Bowl Advertising Appearance: Escapism, Nostalgia, and Humor in the USA

The surroundings are actually the main thing at the Super Bowl. The advertising appearances of celebrities always show how things are going in the USA. The messages 2024? Escapism, nostalgia, humor – with the Beckhams.

Of course, this gag that Victoria and David Beckham are trying to pull off is a pretty tired one: the European couple acts as if they have no idea what the Super Bowl is, what sport it is, or who will take part in it. It still works because the two of them come across as wonderfully self-deprecating in their naive ignorance. In a clip released shortly before the football final on Sunday, they satirize a scene from their Netflix documentary “Beckham”, in which Victoria desperately tries to portray her lower middle class origins – and David asks her to be honest about it (“Be honest!”) and admitting that her father took her to school in a Rolls-Royce.
