On-loan winger Sean McGurk could prove a “big coup” for Swindon Town says interim manager Gavin Gunning.

McGurk joined the League Two club from Leeds United on 1 February on a deal for the rest of the season.

“He’s got so much to learn but so much quality,” Gunning told BBC Radio Wiltshire.

“I think he’s going to be a big coup for the club – anybody who has seen him play – and he’s still not fit, that’s the thing.

“The scary thing is going to be when we get him fit because he’s still nowhere near fit enough to where he wants to be.

“When he gets fit he’s going to be a proper problem.”

McGurk has not yet made a first-team appearance for Championship side Leeds, after joining their academy in 2021 from Wigan’s youth set-up.

He scored the first goal for the Robins against Tranmere, after also scoring on his first start for the club in the 2-2 draw with Gillingham on 13 February.

“His talent isn’t the coachable thing it’s positional play with him, to show him where to be,” Gunning said.

“He needs coaching on where he can improve on being in the right position earlier to use his potential.”

The victory against Tranmere ended a run of nine winless games for 17th-placed Swindon that stretched back to 29 December before Gunning took over.

Gunning said he hoped the win would mark a turning point for the squad.

“Three points is always going to be massive for any team but especially a team like us who has not had the most fantastic of runs which has been long ongoing unfortunately, hopefully that flips us round,” he said.

“We’ve won one game, we’ve not got in the play-offs or anything we’re not winning the league but we’re going in the right direction I feel.”
