Charleroi 0 KRC Genk 1

KRC Genk remains on Champions’ Play-offs course after a narrow but well-deserved victory over Charleroi (0-1). On a dramatic pitch, super sub Yira Sor scored the only goal of the match with his first touch.

Six days after KRC Genk had already fallen behind within two minutes at home against RWDM, it was also the same at Mambourg in the opening phase. Kayembe let Petris escape inside, Vandevoordt had to make a good reflex in the short corner to keep his net clean.

Ten minutes later, the Genk goalkeeper had to stop Bernier in a similar situation, although his teammates had already taken over the initiative at that moment. On a heavy and bumpy field the ball moved relatively quickly, Koffi only had to dirty his gloves on a place ball from El Khannouss.

El Khannouss against the post

Wouter Vrancken had stuck with the team that started the second half against RWDM. Kayembe was preferred over Sobol, Sor – fit again after a muscle injury – started on the bench. He saw ‘competitor’ Bonsu Baah start with spirit on the right, but against the low block of the home team, who limited themselves to defending, it was no easy task to create openings. Also because the field became more dramatic by the minute.

Nevertheless, Hrosovsky and Arokodare managed to outwit the double defense belt with a double pass just after the break. But face to face with Koffi, the Slovakian midfielder could not get past the athletic Charleroi keeper.

With even more pressure to move forward, Genk’s dominance became a squeeze. Targetman Tolu was more often found in the large rectangle. one of his deviations seemed to lead to the overdeserved 0-1. However, El Khannouss’ shot hit the post.

Sor scores on the first ball touch

A Genk goal was inevitable, it came after Vrancken’s first substitution. Sor had less than two minutes to relieve Oyen when he got ahead of his opponent on a cross from El Ouahdi to score with his first ball touch in a while: 0-1.

The Genk victory was only in danger in the following minute. Vandevoordt underlined his top form with a wonderful save from a precise ball from Marcq. The visitors then finished the match quite easily, with star Koffi having to keep Bonsu Baah from making it 0-2 in injury time.
