Students explore history and sports at “Gennaro Portanova” Sports Museum

A day full of educational content for the students of the third, fourth and fifth classes of the “Nostro-Repaci” school institute of Villa San Giovanni, directed by the school director Maristella Spezzano.

The “Gennaro Portanova” Sports Museum in Reggio Calabria welcomed the students and teachers of the prestigious institute and the President of Fortitudo 1903, Riccardo Partinico, illustrated the history of the glorious Reggio Calabria club starting from its foundation on 6 January 1903 at the behest of Cardinal Gennaro Portanova, who joined the Salesian project, conceived by Don Bosco and implemented by his successor Don Michele Rua, to bring young people closer to sport to educate them in a correct lifestyle.

Partinico then explained that the idea of creating the sports museum was born after opening the boxes which had been closed for over fifty years and contained photographs, trophies, medals, plaques, diplomas, religious statuettes, administrative documents, lists of members, newspaper clippings, old books, videos of national, European and world competitions starting from 1903.

The Director of the Museum, Rossella Zoccali, congratulated the Management of “Nostro-Repaci” for being the first school to understand the importance of the “Gennaro Portanova” Museum in the Calabrian territory and to send students for the student week for a guided tour.

The Director’s Collaborator, Santi La Fauci, thanked the Fortitudo staff for the welcome and the cultural opportunity offered to the students who ended their visit by practicing an hour of wrestling with the athletes Iurie Ravliuc and Francesco Gatto.

The teachers explained that practicing combat sports lowers the threshold of aggression and determines self-esteem in school-age children, improving motor skills.
